Irving Wallace has written a magnificent and mighty novel which outshines his previous bestsellers, The Prize and The Man in its theme, its brilliantly realised characters, its clever construction and its sheer unputdownable readability. It is immensely long because it interlocks four different sets of people whose lives reach a climax during the period of a Summit Conference in Paris, whose stories could well make four separate novels. The set- ting moves from London to Vienna, Venice and the Riviera as the contestants in the fight for professional and personal survival converge on Paris. The story is packed with intrigue, romance, black- mail, and all the basic elements of a thriller. The cast is international, the impact tremendous. Drawn to Paris-where the Americans, the Russians and the Chinese are pre- paring to meet in the most crucial sum- mit conference in world history-are a former President of the United States, seeking to secure his place in history; an English girl whose involvement in a Profumo-type scandal has made her notorious throughout the world, and whose efforts to clear her name threaten a British Cabinet Minister at the very moment of the tense summit meeting; a still youthful American diplomat whose career has been ruined and whose loyalty has been placed in doubt by the defection of a nuclear scientist to China; two world-famous journalists, formerly lovers, one-his reputation declining- seeking the biggest story of his life; the other-now at the top of her profession -striving to maintain her professional and emotional dominance over the man who had once rejected her. Against a lovingly created background of the French capital each character despe- rately seeks to regain his lost reputation. But personal intrigue gives way to poli- tical conspiracy when their private manipulations reveal to them the exist- ence of a plot that can trip the balance of world power-a plot in which each of them is unwittingly involved and which only they, together, can defeat.
