Sliman Mansour is a retrospective monograph on the art and life of this pioneering Palestinian artist. For several decades, Mansour has contributed to shaping part of Palestinian visual identity through his paintings and artworks that have become iconic to the Palestinian people. Mansour has created many memorable works that are part of the Palestinian collective memory and identity. He has distilled the experiences of Palestinians through the prism of his canvas, providing important reflection on the changing times he has lived through. This publication explores the artist's important and invaluable contribution to Palestinian visual art. This monograph sets out to present Sliman Mansour's rich art practice that has spanned the last four decades. It includes a forward by Mahmoud Abu Hashhash; essays by Tina Sherwell, Bashir Makhoul and Nicola Gray, and a rate personal interview with the artist by Yazid Anani. Also included is selected archival material from the artist's own personal collection. With this second publication in our Palestinian art series, Al Hoash is working to realise its aspiration of initiating a bi-annual series of research based publications that will enrich the Palestinian library and contribute to documenting and preserving Palestinian art in addition to fostering research, analysis and critical study. Our ambition for and belief in art and culture is to assist it to grow further and wider, in the hope that we can contribute to its preservation and dissemination. Sliman Mansour was born in 1947 in Birzeit, Palestine. His formal academic education was at the Bezalel Art Academy in Jerusalem. Mansour is one of the foremost Palestinian artists of his generation who for many years has reflected upon the Palestinian experience through his canvases. Head of The League of Palestinian Artists from 1979-1983 and again from 1986-1990, he was also a member of the New Vision artist group. He co-founded and directed the Al-Wasiti Art Center in Jerusalem from 1995-2001, and was one of the founders of the Palestinian Contemporary Art Association in 2004. He has exhibited in Palestine and the United States as well as in Arab and European countries. His work is in both private and public collections, including the British Museum; Mathaf, Doha, and the Barjeel Art Foundation in Sharjah. He won the Nile Award at the 1998 Cairo Biennial for his series of clay panels "I am Ismail" and the 1998 Palestine Prize for the Visual Arts
